My Syren Scratch Build

 The USS Syren was a brig of the US Navy during the first Barbary War and the War of 1812.  Served the United States until being captured by the Royal Navy of England in 1814.

Length - 94 ft 4 in.  Beam - 27 ft 9 in.

Crew size - 120 officers and enlisted

Armament - 16 carronades (24 pounders)

I was honored to receive a personal invitation from Chuck Passaro, who developed and marketed the Model Shipways kit for the Syren seen here.

We literally created the parts from the plan sheets as he developed them.

So, here is my gallery of the first completed model of the Syren ever created.

Resumed working on this project in April after setting it aside for over six months to create a special ship to honor my old high school coach.






Not too happy with my carving of her stem figure.

At this point I set this project aside in order to begin creating a special ship to honor my old high school coach.







Note the hull has been copper plated below the water line.

Gun port lids installed.






Decking completed.

Bulwarks painted red.






These small structures, called “badges” were not functional.








Carvings fitted to stern.

The carvings were done in basswood.
